The castle in Poznań was built in 1910 for the last German emperor Wilhelm II. Only 9 years later the castle went under Polish rule and became one of the official government buildings.
At the beginning of the World War II after the German invasion on Poland the castle was taken and reconstruction works began. It was planned to become a residence of Adolf Hitler. Germans also built a bunker on the castle's grounds for almost 400 people.
After the war the castle was expected to be destroyed as it was seen as Prussian and Nazi monument. At the end the building itself survived. It was decided to take off all the Nazi symbols and make few minor reconstructing works.
Today in the castle there is Zamek Culture Centre which is one of the biggest cultural institutions in Poland. It's possible o visit the castle freely and walk across the corridors or just sit and relax.
