Construction works of the basilica started in 1651. At the beginning the Italian-born architect working and leaving in Poland Thomas Poncino de Goricia of Lugano was chosen the main architect. In 1678 he was replaced though by Bartłomiej Nataniej Wąsowski due to some major construction failures. The final works of building the church was drected by Italian-born architect Giovanni Catenazzi.
The ceremonial opening of the Basilica was in 1701 although the church wasn't fully finished yet. Polish painter Karol Dankwart and Italian artist Alberto Biano were still finishing decorating the church. The main altarof the basilica was constructed in 1732 by Pompeo Ferrari.
During World War II the Poznan Fara was transformed into a military warehouse. The building was stripped of its rich decorations and ornaments and also partially demolished by artilery projectiles. The basilica was reconstructed in 1951.
Currently the Poznan Fara is said to be one of the most valuable Baroque architecture monuments of Poland.
