Old Market Square

Old Market Square and the Town Hall

Old Market Square is the third largest one in Poland. The square was a central point of the established in 1253 city of Poznań. During World War II battles in 1945 60% of the Old Market Square was destroyed but the reconstructing works began in the very same year. Main goal of the reconstruction was to keep the place in the same shape as it had been before the war. Nowadays in the Old Market Square area there is plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, bars and pubs so everyone can find an attractive way to spend some free time in.

Town Hall of Poznań is placed in the central point of the Old Market Square. The exact date of establishment isn't known but the first known mention of the Town Hall dates back to 1310. Originally it was built in the Gothic style and the well known these days tower didn't exist. The building was being reconstructed through 1550-1567 by Italian architect Giovanni Batista Quadro of Lugano. The reconstruction was made in the Renaissance style. Currently the Town Hall in Poznań is one of the most valuable architecture monuments of European Renaissance.

One of the biggest attraction and a characteristic point of the whole city of Poznań are the Billy Goats placed in the tower of the Town Hall. You can see them everyday at noon.
