Grand Theatre in Poznań was built in the early years of 20th century under Prussian rule. Architect Max Littmann chose a neoclassical project of the building and the audience without characteristic for opera buildings loges. This choice made the audience more "democratic". The top the bulding is decorated with a pegasus statue which became a well known point of the theatre and the whole city of Poznań.
The Poznań Grand Theatre's artistic existence under Polish rule was inaugurated on August 31th 1919 with a Polish opera "Halka" by Stanisław Moniuszko. Over 30 years later the theatre was officially named after this great composer.
Currently the Grand Theatre in Poznań invites variety of Polish and international artists such as a wonderful Polish bass singer Rafał Siwek, Alexey Tikhomirov, Kristina Kolar, David Puntney, Kirsten Dehlholm, Pippo Delbono and many more.
